Murray is pretty old school elite (eg, long time Harvard prof), and while I know people at both ends of his stereotyped spectrum, it's unclear how reading or not reading books about the rapture makes one more or less american. Seems real issue here is rising and entrenched inequality coupled with declining social mobility. Whether one cares and the types of solutions will vary.

My gym doesn't have a distance meter on the rowing machine. About how long (avg.) does it take to go 250m?

@EJ - New guy to rowing - ~1:15 if working hard
New Elite - I can't see where he speaks of anything different then has gone on for a millennium. There are classes of people. There will always be classes of people. Like it or not - it usually takes $ to make $.

Ironically, that's a pretty elitist assumption by Mr. Murray.
Finally, Mr. Murray assumes that there's a problem inherent in being "new elite." As evidenced by both higher numbers of first generation college students entering college and a massive population exodus from the heartland, it would appear as though many "real" Americans would rather their children do everything they can to be a part of the "new elite."
