1. Interesting article re: the "New Elite." I think it has a lot of validity to it, but I can't figure why the Tea Party has so many wealthy, influential backers who are themselves apart of the "New Elite."

2. Well, it's been going on for decades now, but the tea party has been able to get a good number of people to finally cross the finish line. yes, we are more and more ruled by our "elites" in washington and elsewhere, because we the people were content to let it happen. let us hope that its not too late to stop the trend towards absolute tyranny.

3. Money is what allows the new elite to maintain their status. So why is the tea party working so hard to protect the new elite's money if they hate them so much?

4. So real Americans have both a) watched Oprah's show from beginning to end and b) watch MMA bloodfests. I'm guessing that puts the number of real Americans at about 63.

5. Hi all, I've been following CFFB for a few weeks now. Quick question as I plan my training vs. rest days: Is Wed always an Off Season Rest day? For the past few weeks it has been...

Thanks!

6. @ thatotherguy - sweet, I'm 1/63!

Murray is pretty old school elite (eg, long time Harvard prof), and while I know people at both ends of his stereotyped spectrum, it's unclear how reading or not reading books about the rapture makes one more or less american. Seems real issue here is rising and entrenched inequality coupled with declining social mobility. Whether one cares and the types of solutions will vary.

7. so, the argument here is that smart people & their smart kids should...intentionally avoid marrying other smart people, for it will somehow cause their children to be too smart and too different than normal, dumb people. We need a quality mix of idiots & smart people, or life isn't fair and our children are no longer American? The author suffers from an inability to carry his point out to it's logical conclusion, which is ridiculous, and also a poor case of selection bias by deciding that smart people are unilaterally all marrying other smart people, who are also all apparently rich. This reads a lot less like objective political & social commentary and more like the biased, ignorant opinions of a person rambling about "in..myyyy dayyyy"
signed,
a smart kid from an extremely poor family, who has rich & poor friends alike.

9. Hey,
My gym doesn't have a distance meter on the rowing machine. About how long (avg.) does it take to go 250m?

10. Charles Murray, thank you for this brilliant article. Finally someone who can tell us who the REAL Americans are.

Oh and btw GFY charles.

11. @SP - Yes. Wednesday is a rest day.
@EJ - New guy to rowing - ~1:15 if working hard

New Elite - I can't see where he speaks of anything different then has gone on for a millennium. There are classes of people. There will always be classes of people. Like it or not - it usually takes $ to make $.

15. I think it's a bit insulting to assume that any one segment of the population is the "real" America. So living in a small town in the heartland makes you more of an American than a minority youth in downtown LA? Or, rather, as long as you're not a "new elite" you represent the "real" America?

Ironically, that's a pretty elitist assumption by Mr. Murray.

Finally, Mr. Murray assumes that there's a problem inherent in being "new elite." As evidenced by both higher numbers of first generation college students entering college and a massive population exodus from the heartland, it would appear as though many "real" Americans would rather their children do everything they can to be a part of the "new elite."

16. The idea of a "New Elite" is somewhat of a fear driven fallacy. And to suggest that the leaders on any other time were closer to the "common man" are nothing short of preposterous. Those from the upper echelon of financial and educational society have always had different interests and advantages than those in the middle class, just as being middle class fosters differences with those living below the poverty line. And the suggestion that the rich now only marry the rich and that at some time this wasn't so...I don't seem to remember any Kennedy's marrying plumbers or checkout girls from the local market back in the 50's and 60's. The whole article is nothing but supposition without the support of any real facts.
