1. I'm pretty sure that is a picture of Rugby League, not Union. Good sport, not nearly as cool though.

2. Definitely rugby league, not union. Incredible athletes.

3. Hammer from Australia.

Yes that is Rugby League, I use play for both of those sides in the lower grades. It is Penrith (in black) and Parramatta (in yellow).

4. NFL players are starting to become more like soccer players, overpaid and dramatic, the good old NFL days are over. Rugby players will get hit, concussed, and still play on unless the hit caused a seizure at which point they will be substituted. I'm tired of seeing quarterbacks cry over losses or even calls they don't feel were right, these professional athletes should act like grown men not a bunch of soccer pansies.

5. And yet the Cal Bears, the best collegiate Rugby program in the US, is going drop it's rugby team down to "club" status, after having won 25 national championships since 1980. What the $#@!

6. Found out today that it's difficult to row while dry heaving. Maybe if I could find a way to time the heaves...

7. Hah! wrong thread. Sorry.

Just so this isn't a total waste of time.. I was in Australia last month and figured I'd catch a rugby game while I was there, having no idea that there was even a difference between League and Union. Turns out it was a league game, and not at all like I expected. Oh well. I think I prefer union, and am going to look into a local way to play.

8. That dude looks like he's about 2 seconds away from a world of hurt. But probably he rolled over got up & shook it off. Those dudes that got knocked out this weekend are probably still having headaches & dizzy spells. Once it's agreed that something is 'violent' there's no labeling it 'too violent'. The point of football is to physically impose your will onto your opponent. You can't do that by making nice and going half speed. With the size & strength of athletes today bad things are going to happen when people are running around at full speed in full body armor. Even the advances in helmets don't stop injuries. They might lessen the blow and extent of it but people are still going to get hurt. In high school and college using the old Bike Air helmet if I wasn't seeing double I didn't feel like I was hitting hard enough. But even this past spring when I played in a minor league using one the new 'Revolution' helmets I took a knee to the head that left me with a giant contusion on my forehead & a headache for a week. Probably with an older helmet I'd have been concussed or worse but that's the nature of the beast. When you step out onto that field you put your life in the Football Gods hands & hope for the best.

9. Ya rugby league is brutal. Unlike rugby union, they do not have rules requiring you to wrap up, so it makes for some pretty massive collisions. Look up some rugby big hit videos on YouTube and you'll see what I mean.

10. Soccer sucks.

11. hey hey!

there´s a difference between soccer and soccer! the big teams and stars are always whining and moaning about everything, theyre just spoiled and overpaid, if you go down the leagues its all soccer and no bitchin. and even though its not as physical as football or rygby its still great!

12. Hammer from Australia

Hey fellows, there is a big differents between 'Rugby'(Union) and 'Rugby League' here in Australia.
Rugby League has the biggest hits you ever seen, it is also brutal and you have to have No fear when playing League.
Rugby Union is a gentlemans game and not really brutal, although there are some big blokes that play union and do put on some big hits, However Rugby League is way better and has a lot more body contact in the game.
I think NFL has big hits, almost equal to Rugby League. To us aussie's NFL is a brutal sport, BUT keep bringing on the BIG hits, I say. And one day I would love to see a live game of NFL.

I am in the Australian Army as a Physical Training Instructor (PTI) and play Rugby league for the Army and the Australian Defence Force. Now if you want to see big hits, you should see Army play Navy we hate each other when it come to league, NOW there are some big hits in those games!!!

Is there anyone from Australia?
and doing Crossfit Football?

13. Helmets are the cause of concussions. The new advancements are not helping. I think they are the cause.
Comment by kern — October 20, 2010 at 11:40am
14. Agree with #13. Helmets allow you to use your head as a weapon. Relative to football, how many concussions occur in rugby?

15. 5 years ago big hits were celebrated. Hell, the NFL even SELLS highlight videos of big hits. I thought it was well understood football is a violent and dangerous sport, and that the athletes accepted that. Play basketball or soccer instead if you don't want to get hit hard.

16. it's amazing the amount of brain specialists and sports physiologists that post on a workout blog for football. With that said, my two sense is that it is things like CFFB(advances in training) that have made our sports more dangerous

17. not trying to instigate or debate which is better. To each their own. I just watched a rugby league big hits video. Shit was brutal. And also nowhere near as devastating as what happens on an NFL field.

18. I can't believe Cal is going to down grade the program. Their Rugby team is sick! One year Stanford forfieted because they didn't want to play them. It's really a shame. I played rugby in high school and it seemed like it was really going to start taking off. But years later it's still not very well received. I'll still wear the Cal Rugby shirt I have proudly even if it becomes club.

20. They don't want to get injured then they can go out and get a real job like the rest of us. Until then they can just cry into their multi-million dollar contracts all they fucking want. Jesus. I love watching the NFL, but that doesn't mean I don't think all this whining is just a bunch of overpaid crybabies.

21. For some great big hit highlight reels go to rugbydump.com

It's true that a rugby player will have to be almost to the point of seizure before he/she will sub out of a game...I once watched a premier men's game and a big hit left the guy unconscious face-down on the pitch for a couple minutes. When he woke up, he was totally pissed at the trainer for not letting him stay in the game. I've personally played full games despite cracking a rib or separating my shoulder. It's just part of the rugby culture.

As far as concussions go, I think the number in football and rugby are relatively similar. Lots of players in rugby suffer concussions. I know one girl who has had so many concussions she no longer even has to hit her head in order to get concussion symptoms. In four seasons of playing rugby, I've had at least 3 mild ones, and one moderate one where I suffered symptoms for over a week, plus numerous other small knocks to the head.

Both forms of rugby are great, but Union is better! And...even though this website attracts a lot of football players and I'll probably be slayed for saying this, but, rugby is better than football. There are less breaks in play (weather dependant I guess!), great passing and running plays, and just as many big hits! ;)

25. Wow, there is an awful lot of ignorance being posted on here about the recent NFL hits. It's not about the violence of hits, it's about where and how those hits are being administered.

Go to NFL.com and educate yourself on what Roger Goodell considers a good hit and a bad hit. The good hits are just as violent. They're just not targetting the heads of players who can't protect themselves or can't see the hit coming.
